Lisa never fell apart in a crisis. She went to pieces afterward, when everything was sorted out and everyone taken care of.

Book Review | Through the Blaze (Seasons of Faith #2) by Milla Holt

I don’t know if the Norwegians have the saying, “Marry in haste; repent at leisure”, but that certainly fit Lisa. She married young, against her mother’s advice, and it turned out that her marriage wasn’t a good decision: Kai was a compulsive gambler who lied to hide his addiction.

So when Lisa’s twenty-one year old daughter announces she’s engaged to someone Lisa didn’t even know she was dating, Lisa is not well pleased. However, she is relieved when she finds Kai will be able to contribute to the wedding, and supports it. Maybe he has changed …

Through the Blaze is a romance, and we all know what that means.

Lisa and Kai are going to find their way back together. Here’s the problem: there are good reasons why they broke up, and Lisa shouldn’t even be thinking of reconciling until she’s convinced Kai is no longer a gambler.

But Kai is an addict.

He’s done the whole 12-step process, and he’s even a programme sponsor for another gambling addict. But he’s still an addict. He still needs God’s help to get through each day without gambling.

If Lisa married Kai twenty-four years ago and he had a gambling problem then, and he still had that problem two years ago, I feel she is being completely reasonable to still be suspicious. As such, while I was convinced Kai had changed (probably because the reader only sees him at his best, not his worst), I wasn’t convinced Lisa could make that mental shift.

Through the Blaze is the second book in Milla Holt’s Seasons of Faith Christian romance series, following Into the Flood. While Through the Blaze is a standalone romance, the characters are introduced first in Into the Flood and you may prefer to read the series in order.

Through the Blaze by Milla Holt is a Christian contemporary reunion romance set in Norway. Recommended. #ChristianRomance #BookReview Click To Tweet

Why did money matter so much to her? Because deep down, she didn't trust God to give her what she needed.

Book Review | Into the Flood (Seasons of Faith #1) by Milla Holt

Sonia Krogstad’s perfect life collapses when the investment she has been recommending to all her friends and clients turns out to be an elaborate fraud. When she loses her job, her reputation, and her life savings, she accepts a job in her old hometown as a stopgap until she can get her career going again.

Alex Vikhammer has been thrust into the role of solo father after his ex-wife dies and reveals he is the father of her child. When he discovers the Arts Centre – the only activity Karla enjoys – is closing, he buys it. But the charity leaks cash. He needs a fundraiser, and fast, so hires Sonia.

Alex and Karla were very relatable characters.

Karla is the thirteen-year-old girl who has lost her mother, home, and friends and who now lives in a small town with the geeky father she barely knows. Alex is a good father despite his own doubts. He wants the best for his daughter and keeps reaching out to her, even when she’s the stubborn, silent type. All things considered, her reactions were entirely normal.

Sonia was perhaps harder to like.

She only returned to Berghaven because she had to, and while she does her best for the Arts Centre, she does make a couple of decisions I thought were questionable in that they were consistent with her character, but I didn’t think they were the right decisions. It was a strange relief to find they were bad decisions, and they did come back to bite her … and she did eventually realise her errors. While Sonia’s actions were sometimes frustrating, they were also a strength of the novel because they felt realistic in the context.

It’s also refreshing to read a romance featuring older characters.

Both Sonia and Alex are in their mid-forties or thereabouts. Their relationship therefore has a different vibe than it might have had if they were younger. They are both competent professionals, established in their careers (even if Sonia’s has just fallen apart), which is a nice change from romances with younger characters who are still discovering who they are.

The other thing I liked was the setting: Norway.

Reading stories set in other countries and cultures reminds us that people are the same all over the world. We all have similar stresses and worries, and we all like a good Chinese takeaway.

Into the Flood is Christian romance, although the faith elements are relatively low-key. Still, there is an important message about faith – the importance of coming to faith and staying in the faith when times are bad … or good.

Overall, Into the Flood is a strong Christian romance, recommended for those who like older couples or foreign settings (or both), and those wanting to read more fiction with BIPOC characters.

About Into the Flood

She took this small-town job as a temporary last resort. Falling for her reserved boss was not part of the plan.

One mistake imploded Sonia Krogstad’s PR career, leaving her with a stack of debt and no job prospects. Out of options, she returns to her tiny hometown in the northern wilds of Norway, planning only to stay long enough to get back on her feet and prepare for her big-city comeback.

Reclusive tech genius Axel Vikhammer bought a non-profit community arts center that’s fast becoming a money pit. Closing it down is not an option, especially since it’s a refuge for the teenage daughter he only recently learned he has. With her PR background, Sonia seems the perfect hire for the job as his center’s fundraising manager.

Yet as feelings develop between the two, Axel wonders how he can trust Sonia with his business—or his heart—when her dreams don’t include his small town or him.

With her head and her heart pulling her in different directions, Sonia needs to take a leap of faith. But every time she’s done that in the past, she’s fallen flat on her face. Why should it be different now?

Into the Flood is Book 1 in Milla Holt’s Seasons of Faith Christian romance series. Five friends were in the same wedding in a small Norwegian town over twenty years ago. Four bridesmaids, one bride. Now, two decades on, each woman learns that God’s timing is perfect as they find forever love later in life.

First Line Friday

First Line Friday | Week 167 | Lessons Learned in Love by Milla Holt

It’s First Line Friday! That means it’s time to pick up the nearest book and quote the first line. Today I’m sharing from Hidden in Her Heart by Milla Holt—yes, I’m on a Milla Holt binge 🙂

Here’s the first line from the Chapter One:

Vanya Klassen was used to being overshadowed, but her flamboyant dinner guest would have made even a peacock look drab.

What’s the book nearest you, and what’s the first line?

About Lessons Learned in Love

The boss’s daughter is off-limits. Especially when she steals the job that should have been his.

Vanya has never measured up to her parents’ demanding standards. After a crushing humiliation at her last job, she jumps at the chance to prove herself when her father entrusts her with a leadership role in his company.

Tendo has had nothing handed to him on a silver platter. The son of a refugee, he’s had to claw his way up every rung of the career ladder. Then the CEO’s daughter swoops in to take the job that should have been his. Tendo wants to resent the pampered princess, making his growing attraction unexpected—and entirely unwelcome.

Vanya feels grossly unqualified to manage the brilliant and ambitious Tendo, especially when she realizes that she’s beginning to admire him for a lot more than his professional qualities. And although he knows he’s falling hard and fast, Tendo is proud of being a self-made man. A relationship with the boss’s daughter is exactly the sort of special treatment he despises.

But as Vanya’s and Tendo’s worlds collide, they discover the power of honesty, grace, and trust—and the possibilities of a future built together.

Book Review | Falling for the Foe by Milla Holt

Nia Asaba is an Ugandan health worker with strong opinions about the ethics of big pharmaceutical companies, opinions which often get her in trouble. But she thinks it’s more important to ensure the people of her country have access to affordable and reliable HIV/AIDS medication and care.

Magnus Klassen is the CEO of Nordic Wind Pharmaceuticals, developers of a revolutionary new HIV treatment. But their stock prices are falling, due to bad publicity following a post from a random blogger named Nia Asaba.

So it’s up to Marcus to visit Uganda and try and reverse the effects of the bad publicity by offering the Ugandan government some of their new vaccine.

Of course, Nia and Marcus are thrown together, and sparks fly as they’re united by their combined passion for good healthcare and all things Jane Austen (I have to love a hero who reads and loves Jane Austen, and who finds Emma Woodhouse as annoying as I do).

Falling for the Foe is an excellent first novel.

It has a unique plot and setting, which places a fascinating spin on what could have been a mundane repetition of the falling-for-the-billionaire trope (no, it’s not my favourite). But I do love intelligent and strong-minded heroines, which is why liked Nia from the get-go and wanted only good things to happen to her (but this is a romance novel, and we know a good romance never runs smoothly).

I especially liked the way Marcus’s backstory was introduced. Our first impulse was to not like him for the way he’d ignored Nia at university, then didn’t even remember her. But, as we got to know him, we found there were good reasons why Marcus didn’t remember Nia, and that brought us back to wanting him to succeed.

But the price of Marcus’s success might be Nia’s failure, which gives the novel plenty of conflict, and a great I-told-you-so ending.

This is the first book in a series, and the second will deal with Marcus’s widowed brother, Ragnar. I’m already looking forward to it!

I write inspirational romance with an international twist, with stories that uplift and encourage. Heroes with honor and integrity and strong, can-do heroines are my thing. And the good guys always get their happy ending. My fiction reflects my Christian faith.

I’m not a fan of writing about myself, but here goes. I used to be a lot of things: a journalist, a communications manager for a health activist group, and a freelance copywriter.

Before all that, I was a diplomatic brat, trailing along as my mother’s job took us to various diverse locations around the world.

Now, I’m homeschooling my children in the east of England and devoting every spare moment to writing.
