Bookish Question #316 | What’s the most heartwarming book you’ve read recently?

Heartwarming? While I read a lot of romance, which is often considered a heartwarming genre, I don’t think all romances are actually heartwarming in that while I can cheer for the characters, they generally don’t incite my sympathy.

However, I can think of a few.

Over the Rainbow (Trinity Lakes 8) by Meredith Resce

Over the Rainbow is the next release in the Trinity Lakes multi-author series I’m part of. In this story, Arianne Rayne has relocated to Trinity Lakes to rebuild her life after being paralysed in a car accident. It’s a heartwarming romance that deals with some tough questions around life, love, and God’s healing power in our lives.

Over the Rainbow releases on 21 February 2024.

The Roads We Follow (Fog Harbor 2) by Nicole Deese

I’ve just finished an advance copy of The Roads We Follow by Nicole Deese, which should probably be classified as Christian women’s fiction with romantic elements.

It’s in first person from two points of view (Raegan and Micah), which give the impression it’s a romance. But it’s a story of search for identity: Micah is searching for the identity of his biological father, and Raegan is searching for her identity as an individual, not as the daughter of country music megastar Luella Farrow. It’s a heartwarming (ha!) romance that shares some deep truths about life.

Leaving Oxford (Southern Hearts #1) by Janet W Ferguson

I reread this series towards the end of 2023. While all four books qualify as heartwarming for different reasons, Leaving Oxford was the standout title for me. it’s the story of a woman facing panic attacks whenever she tries to leave her small hometown, and her growing relationship with the local football coach. They’re an unlikely couple, but Janet Ferguson makes it work.

Bookish Question #306 | What debut novels or authors have you discovered this year?

There are two kinds of debut novels–the debut novels that just released (like mine, Always By My Side), and the debut novels from favourite authors that I read years after release.

I’ll share a couple of favourites from both categories: I’ve read and enjoyed all of Janet W Ferguson’s Coastal Hearts novels. I love the location, and I love the way Janet writes about broken people coming to faith in a natural and organic way. But I’d never read her first series, Southern Sweethearts. I just finished Leaving Oxford, and it was brilliant (possibly even more brilliant because I accidentally read the second book in the series first, Going Up South).

I also discovered Emily Botrous, and read my way through her Scripted Love series, starting with With Love, Melody. This was a fun series with a unique twist: couple found love through the written word.

The best debut novel I read this year was The Upwelling by Australian author Lystra Rose was brilliant. It was difficult to read at times (it’s a real good-vs-evil story, so parts of the story are had to read). The Upwelling has been shortlisted for and/or won several prestigious Australian book awards, and each nomination is well deserved.

Heart in the Clouds is by another Australian author, Jennifer Mistmorgan. It’s an excellent World War II story that reminded me of the challenges our grandparents faced during the war years, and helps explain some of their issues and idiosyncrasies.

I also enjoyed Julia Monroe Begins Again by Rebekah Millet is an excellent second-chance romance featuring an older couple.

I don’t know if I can claim to have “discovered” my own debut, Always By My Side, but I certainly discovered that yes, I can write and publish a novel.

First Line Friday #312 | Tackling the Fields by Janet W Ferguson

It’s First Line Friday! That means it’s time to pick up the nearest book and quote the first line. I’m currently re-reading Janet W Ferguson’s brilliant Southern Hearts series, and I’m up to the third book, Tackling the Fields. Here’s the first line from the Chapter One:

Book Review | Holding onto Hope by Janet W Ferguson

Boat captain Caleb Donnelly has been in love with wedding planner Hope Rodriguez for years. Hope has never noticed because she’s got her own unrequited love story: she’s been in love with Peter Thompson for just as long.

They’re both at Pete’s Alabama wedding to Skye (from Healing Skye) when Pete’s brother Andrew drops his own bombshell. He’s getting married. In two weeks. In Wyoming. And Andrew wants Hope to organise not just the wedding, but a week’s worth of “fun” activities for the guests.

So Caleb volunteers to help.

Between them, Hope and Caleb manage to arrange what seems impossible, not helped by the absent bride’s list of requirements. Caroline was Bridezilla on steroids (seriously: if you want to hold an event that doesn’t leave a carbon footprint, you don’t hold it halfway across a continent with only two weeks’ notice).

Most of the people Hope and Caleb talk to think they’re the couple getting married, which is more than a little awkward for Caleb … and for the reader, because I was wondering when Hope was going to notice that Caleb was interested in her.

(It was worth the wait.)

Caleb grew up in foster care after being burned in a house fire as a small child. He carries a lot of physical and emotional scars, so while he’s in love with Hope, he’s also convinced he’s not good enough for her.

Yes, it’s a great setup.

This is one of those books I inhaled – I am an absolute sucker for unrequited love stories, and Caleb was a eminently lovable hero. I was so keen for Caleb and Hope to get their happy-ever-after than I practically inhaled this book. I’m sure I’m going to have to read it again and savour it to pick up the nuances I inevitably missed the first time around … and to enjoy some of the scenes which will no doubt be much more amusing now I know the story plays out.

Recommended for all fans of contemporary Christian romance, or anyone looking for Christian fiction set in Wyoming.

Book Review | Healing Skye by Janet W Ferguson

Despite her traumatic childhood, Skye Youngblood has persevered and earned a doctorate in marine biology. She’s moving to Dauphin Island, Alabama, to take a role researching manatees for the local Sea Lab.

Widower Pete Thompson is the solo father of a six-year-old daughter, Olivia. He’s first on the scene when Skye has an accident on the bridge to the island, and realises she’s the newcomer who’s renting his grandparent’s house.

This book confused me at first. I’ve read Star Rising, the story of Star Youngblood, and the name was similar enough that I wasn’t sure about the character relationships. I also wasn’t sure about the location. The books are part of a series, so I’d expected to read about some familiar characters. If any of these characters were from previous books in the series, I don’t remember them.

Once I’d worked that out, I was able to settle in and enjoy the story. It’s obvious from the first scene that Skye has some pretty serious issues from her past. She’s petrified of men, worries about Olivia living with only her father, and has an uncanny ability to spot scars, both physical and emotional.

Pete runs the family fishing charter business and preaches to his tiny beach church on Sunday morning. And he hears God speak … although he doesn’t always like what he hears. A preacher-fisherman called Peter seems like a bit of a cliche, but Pete lived up to his name. No, he’s not perfect (and there were a couple of times when I wanted to give him a stern talking-to), but he loves God, loves his daughter, and isn’t afraid to do the right thing (even when that includes apologising. there is nothing better than a meaningful apology in a romance.

Skye is broken, but the island – and Pete and Olivia – give her the chance to heal, and that’s great to see (that’s not a spoiler: the clue is in the title). I loved the faith elements and the seamless way they were integrated into the story. It’s rare to read a Christian romance where the faith elements are so central, yet so un-preachy (that’s a word, right?)

Healing Skye is book 6 in the Coastal Hearts series, but can easily be read as a standalone novel (in fact, I might not have been as confused if I hadn’t read some of the earlier books).

Overall, the novel is excellent, and I couldn’t stop reading.

Recommended for Christian romance fans who like plenty of Christian in their romance.

New Releases in Christian Fiction | January 2020

It’s time for the January 2020 New Releases in Christian fiction. I’m a little late in posting these (a combination of holidays and website glitches), but here they are. More in-depth descriptions of these books can be found on the ACFW Fiction Finder website.

Contemporary Romance:

This sounds interesting, but I’m honestly a little apprehensive about reading it, given it’s based on true events. Have you read it? What did you think?

Book Review | Star Rising (Coastal Hearts #4) by Janet W Ferguson

Star Youngblood is rebuilding her life.

A horrible childhood sent her into alcoholism and addiction. She’s now a Christian, has been sober for a year, and is supporting herself by working as an aide and housekeeper for the elderly Mrs. Kelly, who has become surrogate mother. Star’s troubles start when Mrs. Kelly has a heart attack. Her son, Paul, returns and takes an instant dislike to Star.

Then Mrs. Kelly decides she wants to complete the trip she’d planned to take with her husband—to Ireland. She invites Star along as her caregiver, a move which raises Paul’s ire and suspicion. He ends up tagging along, more to keep an eye on Star than to care for his mother.

Star has problems, but she has identified them, is working on them, and most are a direct or indirect result of her childhood mistreatment. While I couldn’t Star’s background from personal knowledge (thankfully), I could respect and admire her progress into becoming the woman God created her to be. Paul Kelly? Not so much.

I will admit that I had a lot of unChristian feelings for Paul.

Sure, he’d given up on Christianity, but he’d also turned into an unkind and suspicious person. I also suspected he never had a deep Christian faith to begin with, as the event that caused him to lose his faith didn’t seem a big enough deal to abandon faith in God. (Abandon the church, sure. But not God.) That low baseline meant Paul had a lot of room to grow and improve— and he had a lot of improving to do if he was going to be worthy of Star.

Janet Ferguson did a brilliant job of redeeming Paul.

By the end I was convinced that he and Star would make a great couple. This is a credit to the excellent writing. Overall, Star Rising is an excellent example of Christian romance, with an emphasis on the “Christian”. The Christian elements are well integrated into the plot so they’re essential, but never preachy.

Recommended.

Note that Star Rising is the third novel in the Coast Hearts series, but can easily be read as a standalone story.
