Book Review | Survive the Night (Harmony Grove #4) by Carol J Post

Survive the Night

Lexi Simmons was planning a girl’s night with her cousin, Kyla, when she got the call. The serial killer she’s chasing has killed again … and the victim is Kyla. The case becomes even more personal when Lexi finds she’ll be working with Alan White, her college boyfriend.

Working with Alan isn’t bad. In fact, he comes up with some intelligence that provides a valuable clue. As they work the case, they also discover the truth behind their college breakup, which gives them the opportunity to consider their personal and professional relationship.

Meanwhile, they have a serial killer to catch.

The problem with reading (and reviewing) a Carol J Post romantic suspense novel is that they’re hard to put down. I read this in a single day, and re-read good portions of it as I wrote my review.

Survive the Night is an enjoyable second-chance romance set against the backdrop of a hunt for a serial killer. The characters are strong, the plot has plenty of twists and turns, and there were enough red herrings that I was completely surprised by the identity of the evildoer.

I especially liked the Christian thread.

Lexi isn’t a Christian, but Alan is. According to the unwritten rules of Christian romance, that means she needs to change. Some novels gloss over the change (perhaps because they don’t want a Damascus Road conversion experience). I thought Survive the Night addressed the issue well (which is something I expect from Carol J Post novels).

Recommended for Christian romantic suspense fans.

Her choices in men hadn’t always been the best—actually they’d been horrible—but she knew when a man was holding out on her.

Book Review | Pay the Price (Harmony Grove #3) by Carol J Post

I opened Pay the Price to check the file had downloaded correctly, then created my First Line Friday post because the first line did catch my eye. I wasn’t planning to read the novel …

… yet three hours later, I’d finished.

Jessica Parker arrives back in Harmony Grove following her younger sister’s death. She hasn’t got a key and the spare key isn’t in the usual hiding place. So she’s forced to break in through the rear sliding door.

Inside, she finds the house has been ransacked … then she is attacked by a man with a gun. The intruder turns out to be Shane Dalton, an FBI agent working undercover in Harmony Grove, hunting for drug smugglers. And they’ve had a tip that Priscilla Parker might be involved.

It’s a fast-paced start, and it certainly kept me reading.

I liked Jessica, which is always a good start. She’s bright and brave, and has overcome a lot of hardship. I enjoyed reading about her faith journey (one of Carol J Post’s strengths as a writer), and I have to agree with Jessica’s view of snakes:

"She hated snakes. It didn’t matter what kind. Poisonous, harmless, large or small. The only good snake was a dead snake."

Shane is also a strong character, and another who has a troubled past–the death of his wife, and his subsequent avoidance of relationships of all kinds. Despite his loss, he’s retained his faith in God, something Jessica never had. Shane realises the best way to find information will be partnering with Jessica and finding out what happened to Priscilla and why … and was it really a suicide?

The suspense was well-written, with great pace and enough humour to offset the ever-present tension.

I was pleased to get to the end and find a preview for the next book in the series, which means this isn’t the last book. That’s great news, as I’m enjoying the Harmony Grove books and wouldn’t want to see them end yet. After all, there are still some single characters …

All in all, I recommend Pay the Price for fans of Christian romantic suspense.

How could he choose between his mother's life and a cause that was so close to both their hearts?

Book Review | Shatter the Silence (Harmony Grove #2) by Carol J Post

Domestic violence survivor Tia Jordan runs a women’s shelter in the small town of Harmony Grove, Florida. Everything is going well, especially when she receives the welcome news that her shelter has inherited a property from a local woman—a house that will allow Tia to expand the shelter and protect more women and children.

But this is romantic suspense, so we know things are going to turn to custard soon. First, Tia gets a call from a parole officer to say her abusive ex-husband has been granted early release from prison. Then she meets the dead woman’s grandson, who is none too impressed that he has only inherited the contents of the house, not the house itself. Finally, there is an incident after one of the shelter’s residents accidentally lets slip where she is staying, and her violent ex turns up.

That gives us plenty of potential evildoers.

The different characters (good and bad) and their conflicts added layers to the plot and gave plenty of opportunity for twists. I appreciated the complexity—my complaint about the first novel in the Harmony Grove series (Flee the Darkness) was that it was pretty obvious who the evildoer was, which meant the romantic suspense was mostly about waiting for the inevitable to happen, with little or no surprise.

Shatter the Silence was almost the opposite. While there is an understated romance, the suspense definitely took first place. And that made sense. Tia is an intelligent and capable woman, and I would have thought less of her if she’d made a silly mistake like falling too fast for the first handsome man who looked her way. As a survivor, she needed to give Jason time to prove himself, and she did.

I liked the fact the novel looked at the real-life issue of domestic violence, and how easy it can be for women (and men) to find themselves in an abusive or violent situation.

The other thing I liked was the Christian aspect.

Both Tia and Jason were Christians from the beginning, and their faith was shown by their actions in a range of low-key ways. Overall, Shatter the Silence was an excellent Christian romantic suspense novel with wounded yet believable characters and plenty of twists.

About Shattered Silence

The hidden wounds bleed the worst…

Tia Jordan almost died at the hands of an abusive, cruel husband and carries the scars, both inside and out. She is using those experiences to help other women and children find solace. Right now, her abused women’s shelter is bursting at the seams. When she learns she’s heir to a huge two-story house outside of town, she thanks God for unexpected blessings, until a grandson shows up with another will, threatening to contest hers.

For the past several months, Jason Sloan has kept his nose to the grindstone, watching his mother’s cancer treatments dwindle away his savings. When he learns the inheritance he counted on has been left to Tia and her shelter, he’s torn. With his mother and him having been forced to flee an abusive situation themselves, Tia’s cause hits too close to home. All disagreements take a back seat, though, when he and Tia find themselves working together to fight an unseen foe. But which one of them is the target?
