Book Review | Mountain Abduction Rescue by Darlene L Turner

Mountain Abduction Rescue starts with a bang and the pace doesn’t let up until the last page. Park warden Hazel Hoyt is a solo mother working in Micmore National Park, Alberta, on the trail of a serial arsonist while her son is camping in the park with his scout troop.

She encounters the arsonist, and discovers he knows her family—her father is the regional park supervisor. She also encounters Mitchell Booth, her best friend’s older brother and first crush.

Sibling’s best friend is of my favourite romance tropes, so that’s a win!

Mitchell has recently returned to the area and now leads the local fire crew. He rescues Hazel, helps her find her son’s scout troop, and stands up for her when her father arrives. Now it’s a race to find her son before the firebug does.

Maybe I’m a little slow, but I was surprised when the missing children turned out to have been abducted. The title should have been a big fat hint that the story was going to feature and abduction and a rescue in the mountains. The thought of missing children providing a fair dose of tension. Adding in an abduction ramped that up and kept me reading.

I liked the fact the novel had a clear spiritual thread.

I understand some people read Christian fiction because they don’t want to read books full of sex and violence, but I think there should be something more in a Christian novel. As such, I loved the reminder that God loves us in spite of our doubts. (Given what we see of Hazel’s father, it’s no surprise she has doubts and believes she’s not good enough for God.)

As with all Love Inspired Suspense, Mountain Abduction Rescue was a short Christian romantic suspense read (again, the clue is in the series name). This made it a quick read, as there was nothing to distract the characters (or the reader) from the central suspense plot. Love Inspired novels might not have the depth of plot or characterisation of longer novels, but they consistently deliver fast-paced low-angst romantic suspense with a strong faith arc.

Mountain Abduction Rescue by Darlene L Turner delivers a fast-paced romantic supsense novel featuring the sibling's best friend trope. #ChristianRomance #BookReview Click To Tweet

How could they stop the Jingle Bell Bomber's deadly game?

Book Review | Explosive Christmas Showdown by Darlene L Turner

There’s a meme going around Facebook right now that encapsulates why I’m not really a fan of Christmas romances:

A moment of silence for all the big city, suit-wearing guys who are about to get dumped for a small-town guy wearing flannel in a Hallmark Christmas movie this holiday season.

So I was a little apprehensive about signing up to Darlene L Turner’s review team to read and review Explosive Christmas Showdown, her latest title from Love Inspired Suspense. After all, Christmas is right there in the title …

But when I read the book description, I realised this wasn’t the cliché Hallmark Christian romance the meme is mocking. Explosive Christmas Showdown starts with a bang:

Someone in your office will die today.

And the pace doesn’t let up until the final page.

It was the perfect blend of all the components that go to making up a great romance.

There was Olive Wells, an intelligence analyst for the federal police in Ottawa – I always like a professional woman who is good at her job. There was Zac Turner, her ex-fiancé, who is also a law enforcement professional – who is immediately loveable enough that I wondered why they ever broke up.

There is Zika, Zac’s K-9 partner in policing – I am always suspicious of a man who doesn’t like animals, so a dog handler is a perfect occupation for a romance hero. And there is the evildoer: the Jingle Bell Bomber, someone from Olive’s past with vengeance on their mind.

Olive and Zac used to be together, so I enjoyed finding out more about their history and why they broke up when they are so evidently a great match (yes, I always enjoy a good reunion romance, especially in shorter fiction like Love Inspired, as long as there is a good reason for them breaking up in the first place. In this case, there was).

Ziva was lovely. I’m more of a cat person than a dog person, but even I want a Ziva of my own. The suspense was excellent. While we’re made aware early on that the bomber knows Olive, their identity isn’t obvious, which adds to the tension. And there is plenty of tension, both from the bombs and the romance.

All in all, Explosive Christmas Showdown has everything I enjoy in a novel, set in a snowy December in Ontario (so nothing like the sunny Christmases I experience living in New Zealand).

Recommended for fans of Christian romantic suspense.

Safe House Exposed by Darlene L Turner

Book Review | Safe House Exposed by Darlene L Turner

Canadian Police Constable Mason James is undercover to investigate a leak in the Canadian Witness Protection Program when he learns one of the targeted witnesses is Emily, a Canadian Border Services Agency officer … and his widowed sister-in-law. Emily and her daughter, Sierra, are in danger from the criminal Luther family after she put the father in jail.

Safe House Exposed has a strong suspense thread.

I didn’t find the romance element as compelling. There’s always a should-they-shouldn’t-they element with siblings interested in the same person, even if the other sibling is dead. My main issue was that I simply didn’t see the romance. Sure, I could see they should have a relationship—Mason should have been around to support his sister-in-law and niece since she lost her husband—but I didn’t see the underlying emotion to make that relationship romantic.

But maybe I was focussing too much on the suspense. While I’m not a fan of dirty-cop plots, this one was well done. There were a couple of great twists that I didn’t see coming, and while I guessed a couple of vital clues in advance, I had no idea who would turn out to be the evildoer. yes, it was obvious in hindsight (as it should be), but I had no idea.

I do have a content warning:

Emily’s marriage to Brady wasn’t the rainbows and unicorns relationship Mason or Seth (Mason’s father and boss) thought it was. Emily is one of many law enforcement spouses who is a domestic violence survivor. While there were no detailed descriptions, I do know that’s a topic some readers would prefer to be aware of ahead of time. Also, (spoiler alert), I was disappointed in Mason’s reaction to learning about his brother’s behaviour, even though Mason’s reaction was probably the most true to real life.

Overall, Safe House Exposed ticks all the Love Inspired Suspense boxes.

Book Review | Lethal Cover-Up by Darlene L Turner

Canada Border Services Agency border patrol officer Madison Steele was adopted as a child, and has recently reconnected with her birth sister … when her sister is murdered. And the murder appears to be tied up with smuggling and dodgy pharmaceuticals. Police constable Tucker Reed is in charge of the investigation, which means he’s working with Madison, the girl who dumped him in high school when he became a Christian.

The novel started with a bang, and the setup was excellent. Madison is still antagonistic towards Christianity, so that meant the novel was going to have an interesting faith arc (and it did, which is always a bonus). However, I didn’t think we needed the added complication of Tucker’s medical diagnosis, and it would be great to read a suspense novel which didn’t involve dirty cops.

While the writing didn’t always shine, the suspense was solid, with plenty of puzzles to work out around the rumours of medical misdoings and dodgy drugs. The pace was fast, and the novel was an easy read with a satisfying ending.

Lethal Cover-Up by Darlene L Turner is solid romantic suspense, with plenty of puzzles around medical misdoings and dodgy drugs. #BookReview #ChristianFiction Click To Tweet

I didn’t enjoy this as much as I enjoyed her previous two novels, Border Breach and Abducted in Alaska, but it was still a solid romantic suspense novel, and I will look forward to next novel.

If it wasn’t gunmen out to get them, it was Mother Nature. They couldn’t catch a break.

Book Review | Abducted in Alaska by Darlene L Turner

Hannah Morgan is a border patrol officer with the Canadian Services Border Agency in Yukon. She’s on patrol when a small boy appears in the snow … followed rapidly by a man with a gun. She soon discovers the boy has escaped from a gang kidnapping children as child labor.

Layke Jackson is a police officer on loan from Alberta. He volunteered to investigate child labor smuggling, but the investigation becomes personal when he discovers his half-brother’s son is one of the kidnapped children.

Abducted in Alaska starts with a literal bang, and the pace doesn’t let up.

Hannah, Layke, and small Gabe try to evade the kidnappers, but the gunmen keep finding them. It became obvious early on that there was a leak in law enforcement. Unfortunately, I picked this up a long time before Hannah or Layke worked it out. While I like working out who-dun-it before the big reveal, I also like the law enforcement professionals to pick up clues faster than I do.

Abducted in Alaska is from Love Inspired Suspense, which means that as well as the snow-filled Alaskan setting, it has a developing romance (nicely done) and a strong faith element.

Hannah is a Christian who thanks God whenever something good happens, and prays when she needs help (two excellent habits for all of us to seek to emulate!). Layke is not a Christian, but is challenged by Hannah and Gabe’s faith. Overall, Abducted in Alaska is a solid romantic suspense with plenty of emphasis on the suspense and action.

An enjoyable read for romantic suspense fans.

Giveaway | Finding Joy in Forgiveness by Darlene L. Turner

Today I have a guest post from Canadian Romantic Suspense author, Darlene L Turner. And she has a giveaway—one ebook copy of her latest release, Abducted in Alaska. Welcome, Darlene!

Early morning is my favourite time, especially during the warmer months. I love to sit outside on my patio listening to the cardinals sing during the summer. I enjoy smelling the freshness in the air, and marvelling in the creation of the brilliant heavenly blue morning glories climbing my fence. It’s almost like they smile at me with their huge faces. I smile back.

Blue Morning Glories

When I look at them, I see one thing. Joy.

But joy wasn’t always there. Many mornings I didn’t feel like smiling. Inside, I was wilting like a flower without water. Happiness was zapped out of me after my first husband left me. I had wondered if I would ever get it back.

Anger crept in and took me to a place of bitterness.  I was mad at him for leaving, and yes, even at God for allowing it to happen. But did I stay there?

No, I couldn’t.

I knew even though God allowed this journey to happen in my life, He knew the bigger picture. He wanted me to trust, so I slowly left my anger at the foot of the cross. I began to choose joy and forgiveness.

Did it happen easily? Of course not. It was a difficult journey. A few steps forward, many steps back. I worked through the anger, confusion, and defeat with the help of a counsellor, family, friends, and many prayers. I chose to forgiveness because I did not want the bitterness to consume my life. No one likes to be around someone filled with resentment. We avoid it at all costs. And doesn’t God command us to forgive? Yes, seventy times seven.

In Abducted in Alaska, Layke struggles with forgiving his mother for the years of abuse he suffered by her hand. This causes him trust issues and he holds back in any of his relationships. Throughout the book he has to deal with this in order to move on. Will he? You’ll have to read the book to find out!

However, in my story after months had subsided, I met with my spouse to sign the divorce papers. I felt surprisingly calm. The bitterness was gone and I knew it was time to move on. So I did.

Joy came in the morning, and brought back my smile.

Bitterness can consume our lives so easily. We must learn to recognize it, forgive, and then move on. When we do, God will give us a peace and help us to find joy again.

Question for giveaway: Share a book on forgiveness that has helped you (fiction or non-fiction).

Psalm 30:11-12 (The Message)
You did it: you changed wild lament into whirling dance;
You ripped off my black mourning band and decked me with wildflowers.
I’m about to burst with song; I can’t keep quiet about you.
God, my God, I can’t thank you enough.
