Book Review | Midnight’s Budding Morrow by Carolyn Miller

I almost didn’t request this book to review because the cover didn’t appeal to me. It felt too dark, although I could see it reflected the title (actually, I wasn’t too keen on the title, either). But it’s by Carolyn Miller, and I’ve enjoyed every one of her novels so far … so I decided to give it a go.

Sarah Drayton is single and of “advanced age” (about twenty-eight) in a time when ladies are supposed to be married much younger. She goes to stay with Beatrice Langley, an old school friend, but is tricked into a marriage of convenience with Beatrice’s badly behaved brother, Captain James Langley.

We see James from Sarah’s point of view at first, and he doesn’t come across as a likeable person. But we get to know him better as the story progresses, and have more sympathy for him as we understand him better.

For his part, James has no desire to marry Sarah—but has even less desire to see his estate go to a distant cousin. But if he wants an heir, he’s going to have to spend time with his bride and court her properly.

Midnight’s Budding Morrow is darker than many of Carolyn Miller’s previous books.

The combination of the decaying old house, unhelpful servants, and overbearing patriarch give the story a gothic feel, like old Victoria Holt or Mary Stewart stories. The age-old rumours of a hidden treasure in the house only reinforce that feeling.

While the start is somewhat dark and a little contrived (aren’t all marriage of convenience stories? Isn’t that why we love them?), the novel progresses well. It is yet another strong novel from Carolyn Miller, with excellent characters, a unique setting, and a strong Christian faith arc.

Book Review | Big Apple Atonement (Original Six #5) by Carolyn Miller

Most heroes in romance novels are described as attractive or good-looking or handsome. But not Big Apple Atonement. In fact, the heroine thinks he’s ugly (if he was ever handsome, the hockey scars and missing teeth mean he isn’t any more).

An ugly hero is unusual, and it got me hooked from the first line.

Emma Moritello comes from a hockey-loving family so she’s familiar with many of the players, including bad boy TJ Woletsky. Emma works at Hopetoun Children’s Home, a temporary home for children who’ve experienced trauma while they wait to be matched with a foster family.

TJ Woletsky is the bad boy of ice hockey, the one who gets too many fines and suspensions for penalties and rough play … including one move that put one of Emma’s old school friends in hospital. After one hit too many and a lecture about his bad attitude, TJ finds himself traded to New York. It’s his last chance to redeem himself to the team, the critics, and the fans.

And that brings him into contact with Emma via her co-worker and friend, Laura, who is married to TJ’s new team captain. Tim challenges him to up his game both personally and professionally and brings him to the home where he meets Emma.

As TJ changes, Emma’s attitude towards him also changes and a relationship develops.

I loved this plotline, and thought it was handled brilliantly. Often, the two characters in an enemies-to-more plot won’t have any good reason to be enemies. In Big Apple Atonement, there is every reason why Emma doesn’t like TJ. It’s about his character, attitude, actions, and lack of faith, not the way he looks. But as TJ gets serious about changing his attitudes and puts his newfound faith into practice, Emma’s attitudes also change.

The bad-boy-turned-good plot that brought TJ from a reckless player who didn’t take responsibility for his actions to a growing Christian who wants to make things right was both compelling and convincing. It took time, and it wasn’t easy … just like in real life. I appreciated the realism, and the fact there were no quick and easy answers.

Big Apple Atonement is the fifth novel in Carolyn Miller’s Original Six series, about ice hockey players finding love. Each story is a standalone in that they all feature different couples, but they are also linked into that the characters know each other, so we do get to find out more about some of the characters in the earlier stories. You don’t have to read all the novels, but it would probably pay to read them in order.

Recommended for contemporary Christian romance fans, especially those who like sports stories … or redemption stories.

Bookish Question #220 | Do you know of any novels with scenes featuring tea?

The British Empire was built on tea: morning tea, afternoon tea, and tea with supper.

As such, it shouldn’t be any surprise that the novels I can think of with tea are from British authors, Commonwealth authors, or novels set in the British Empire.

In All the Tea in China by Jane Orcutt, the hero is returning to China to find and source the famed white tea. there are several scenes where he discusses his plans with the heroine.

The characters in Carol Preston’s Australian historical romances often discuss their day and their problems over a cup of tea. In fact, most of the action happens over the teacups.

Many of Carolyn Miller’s Regency romances feature characters conversing over a cup of tea. It was the drink of choice when one’s morning visitors arrived.

I know all these novels had tea scenes, and I’m sure some were significant. However, I can’t actually think of any 🙁

New Releases in Christian Fiction | January 2022

Welcome to 2022! It’s New Year’s Day in New Zealand, and I’m off to watch Day One of the cricket test (yes, Day One. A Test lasts five days, and still might end in a draw). It’s a good chance to sit in the sun, do some people-watching, and perhaps read a little during the lunch and tea breaks.

What will I be reading?

I’ve already read Grace Across the Miles by Christine Dillon (I’m biased, but it’s excellent … not just because it’s partly set in New Zealand). Harmony on the Horizon is next on the list, and I’m looking forward to Love on Ice by Carolyn Miller (as I’m currently enjoying The Breakup Project, the first in the series). I also want to read Marrying Mr Wrong by Melissa Jagears, because it sounds like a fun novel!
