Book Review | Mountain Abduction Rescue by Darlene L Turner

Mountain Abduction Rescue starts with a bang and the pace doesn’t let up until the last page. Park warden Hazel Hoyt is a solo mother working in Micmore National Park, Alberta, on the trail of a serial arsonist while her son is camping in the park with his scout troop.

She encounters the arsonist, and discovers he knows her family—her father is the regional park supervisor. She also encounters Mitchell Booth, her best friend’s older brother and first crush.

Sibling’s best friend is of my favourite romance tropes, so that’s a win!

Mitchell has recently returned to the area and now leads the local fire crew. He rescues Hazel, helps her find her son’s scout troop, and stands up for her when her father arrives. Now it’s a race to find her son before the firebug does.

Maybe I’m a little slow, but I was surprised when the missing children turned out to have been abducted. The title should have been a big fat hint that the story was going to feature and abduction and a rescue in the mountains. The thought of missing children providing a fair dose of tension. Adding in an abduction ramped that up and kept me reading.

I liked the fact the novel had a clear spiritual thread.

I understand some people read Christian fiction because they don’t want to read books full of sex and violence, but I think there should be something more in a Christian novel. As such, I loved the reminder that God loves us in spite of our doubts. (Given what we see of Hazel’s father, it’s no surprise she has doubts and believes she’s not good enough for God.)

As with all Love Inspired Suspense, Mountain Abduction Rescue was a short Christian romantic suspense read (again, the clue is in the series name). This made it a quick read, as there was nothing to distract the characters (or the reader) from the central suspense plot. Love Inspired novels might not have the depth of plot or characterisation of longer novels, but they consistently deliver fast-paced low-angst romantic suspense with a strong faith arc.

Mountain Abduction Rescue by Darlene L Turner delivers a fast-paced romantic supsense novel featuring the sibling's best friend trope. #ChristianRomance #BookReview Click To Tweet

How could they stop the Jingle Bell Bomber's deadly game?

Book Review | Explosive Christmas Showdown by Darlene L Turner

There’s a meme going around Facebook right now that encapsulates why I’m not really a fan of Christmas romances:

A moment of silence for all the big city, suit-wearing guys who are about to get dumped for a small-town guy wearing flannel in a Hallmark Christmas movie this holiday season.

So I was a little apprehensive about signing up to Darlene L Turner’s review team to read and review Explosive Christmas Showdown, her latest title from Love Inspired Suspense. After all, Christmas is right there in the title …

But when I read the book description, I realised this wasn’t the cliché Hallmark Christian romance the meme is mocking. Explosive Christmas Showdown starts with a bang:

Someone in your office will die today.

And the pace doesn’t let up until the final page.

It was the perfect blend of all the components that go to making up a great romance.

There was Olive Wells, an intelligence analyst for the federal police in Ottawa – I always like a professional woman who is good at her job. There was Zac Turner, her ex-fiancé, who is also a law enforcement professional – who is immediately loveable enough that I wondered why they ever broke up.

There is Zika, Zac’s K-9 partner in policing – I am always suspicious of a man who doesn’t like animals, so a dog handler is a perfect occupation for a romance hero. And there is the evildoer: the Jingle Bell Bomber, someone from Olive’s past with vengeance on their mind.

Olive and Zac used to be together, so I enjoyed finding out more about their history and why they broke up when they are so evidently a great match (yes, I always enjoy a good reunion romance, especially in shorter fiction like Love Inspired, as long as there is a good reason for them breaking up in the first place. In this case, there was).

Ziva was lovely. I’m more of a cat person than a dog person, but even I want a Ziva of my own. The suspense was excellent. While we’re made aware early on that the bomber knows Olive, their identity isn’t obvious, which adds to the tension. And there is plenty of tension, both from the bombs and the romance.

All in all, Explosive Christmas Showdown has everything I enjoy in a novel, set in a snowy December in Ontario (so nothing like the sunny Christmases I experience living in New Zealand).

Recommended for fans of Christian romantic suspense.

Safe House Exposed by Darlene L Turner

Book Review | Safe House Exposed by Darlene L Turner

Canadian Police Constable Mason James is undercover to investigate a leak in the Canadian Witness Protection Program when he learns one of the targeted witnesses is Emily, a Canadian Border Services Agency officer … and his widowed sister-in-law. Emily and her daughter, Sierra, are in danger from the criminal Luther family after she put the father in jail.

Safe House Exposed has a strong suspense thread.

I didn’t find the romance element as compelling. There’s always a should-they-shouldn’t-they element with siblings interested in the same person, even if the other sibling is dead. My main issue was that I simply didn’t see the romance. Sure, I could see they should have a relationship—Mason should have been around to support his sister-in-law and niece since she lost her husband—but I didn’t see the underlying emotion to make that relationship romantic.

But maybe I was focussing too much on the suspense. While I’m not a fan of dirty-cop plots, this one was well done. There were a couple of great twists that I didn’t see coming, and while I guessed a couple of vital clues in advance, I had no idea who would turn out to be the evildoer. yes, it was obvious in hindsight (as it should be), but I had no idea.

I do have a content warning:

Emily’s marriage to Brady wasn’t the rainbows and unicorns relationship Mason or Seth (Mason’s father and boss) thought it was. Emily is one of many law enforcement spouses who is a domestic violence survivor. While there were no detailed descriptions, I do know that’s a topic some readers would prefer to be aware of ahead of time. Also, (spoiler alert), I was disappointed in Mason’s reaction to learning about his brother’s behaviour, even though Mason’s reaction was probably the most true to real life.

Overall, Safe House Exposed ticks all the Love Inspired Suspense boxes.

Book Review| Trailing a Killer by Carol J Post

Erin Jeffries is a police detective and volunteer canine search and rescue worker. When she’s called to a house that’s collapsed in a hurricane, the last person she expects to rescue is her teenage sweetheart, Cody Elbourne. And neither of them expect a collapsed house to turn into a murder investigation … or for Cody to be worried for his life.

Yes, Trailing a Killer starts off with a bang.

The pace only lets up long enough for Erin and Cody to rediscover their previous relationship (well, this is Love Inspired Suspense. We want the Love as much as the Suspense).

I enjoyed reading about Alcee, Erin’s search and rescue dog. As a cat owner, I’m always impressed by dogs and their willingness to work. In fact, they delight in being helpful. Cats … not so much. I was especially impressed by Alcee’s uncanny canine abilities to identify those she likes and trusts vs. those she doesn’t. I will definitely be interested in reading more books in this series.

There were also some more serious issues. Erin in particular has some scars in her background that affect her ability to trust others, especially men. She’s a new Christian and is working through those issues—and it was great to see a new Christian working through what it means to be a person of faith.

I am a fan of Carol J Post’s novels, and this is no exception.

The plot was perfect romantic suspense, the characters were strong (I’m always a fan of female characters who are competent in an unusual profession), and the ending was spot on.

Trailing a Killer by @CarolJPost is perfect #Christian #RomanticSuspense. The characters are strong, and the ending is just right. Click To Tweet

First line from Border Breach by Darlene L Turner: Officer Kaylin Poirier's stomach lurched at the sight of the two people inside a white florist van that pulled up to her booth at the Windsor-Detroit border.

Book Review | Border Breach by Darlene L Turner

Kaylin Poirier is a border patrol officer on the US/Canadian border with a particular passion to stop the import of illegal drugs after her brother died. Kaylin knows something is off when she stops a suspicious-looking van on the border and finds the driver has a photograph of her. But she doesn’t expect to become a target after the van crosses the border illegally …

Hudson Steeves is a police constable assigned to work with Kaylin to find the missing van, which belonged to a local florist. He’s attracted to her, but she’s not a Christian. And some of the things she says and people she knows point to an unexpected history.

This is Darlene L Turner’s debut novel, from Love Inspired Suspense.

LIS books tend to be plot-driven and fast-paced, and Border Breach is no exception. It’s a fast read with plenty of action that barely gives the reader a chance to draw a breath as Kaylin and Hudson overcome their initial animosity and agree to work together to find the person behind the drugs entering the country and circulating through the schools (I did guess the evildoer’s identity early on, but my logic turned out to be 100% wrong!).

The one problem with such a fast-paced approach is that it can sometimes feel like the character development is lacking. Kaylin and Hudson have plenty of personal history as individuals and together. There’s almost too much history for such a short novel—but I’d much rather read a book and wish it could have been longer than the opposite!

I particularly enjoyed the fact the novel was set in Canada, as that provided a new perspective on the war against drugs.

A solid debut, recommended for romantic suspense fans.

Quote from Dangerous Relations: The pieces were falling into place, but she didn’t like where they were landing.

Book Review | Dangerous Relations by Carol J Post

Shelby Adair isn’t on the best of terms with her sister, but she still doesn’t expect to arrive for a dinner invitation and find her sister dead and her apartment crawling with police.

Nor does Shelby expect the brother of her sister’s useless ex to show up, trying to claim custody of her niece.

He’ll let Shelby take Mia for now. But only because Abby, Mia’s nanny, has offered to go as well, so at least there will be someone familiar in Mia’s life.

Shelby runs her aunt’s diner in a small Washington town. Taking care of Mia is something she can do. She’s determined not to let Ryan’s parents get Mia, especially as there as something fishy about her sister’s death …

Well, this is Love Inspired Suspense …

That means there is something fishy, and there is plenty of tension, especially once it becomes obvious someone is after them. But who? Why? And how is Mia’s father involved?

Dangerous Relations has all the necessary ingredients of an enjoyable romantic suspense novel—a loving and independent heroine, an ex-military hero, something that draws them together (their niece), and some outside force that’s trying to keep them apart. It’s a fast and gripping read, perfect for romantic suspense fans.

Quote from Bodyguard for Christmas: But would God really hear him, one man among millions? What if God was busy elsewhere, doing important things like preventing massive natural disasters?

Bodyguard for Christmas by Carol J Post

Despite the title, Bodyguard for Christmas isn’t really a Christmas story. I see Christmas stories as focusing around family and faith, not escaping from evildoers.

Bodyguard for Christmas is definitely the escaping from evildoers plot.

Assistant district attorney Colton Gale has a quiet life in comparison to his twin brother Cade, an antiques dealer and Indiana Jones wannabe. But Colton’s life turns all-too-exciting when he returns home to find someone attempting to kidnap his three-year-old son. Liam hasn’t spoken since his mother died, six months ago, and this new trauma won’t help. Colton decides he needs to hire a bodyguard to protect his son, and the bodyguard turns out to be his attractive neighbour, Jasmine NcNeal. They travel to Murphy, North Carolina, the location of two of Carol Post’s earlier novels (which means we get a few fun cameos from their now-married couples). Despite their move, trouble is never far away, which makes for a page-turning suspense novel.

Bodyguard for Christmas has plenty of twists and turns, and a slow-building romance.

Jasmine is clever and competent, which I think are two necessary qualities in any heroine and especially in a romantic suspense heroine. Colton is caring and protective, and quickly gets over his macho problem with a diminutive female bodyguard—a perfect hero. Bodyguard for Christmas is an enjoyable quick read, just right for the busy Christmas season. And no matter what happens to your Christmas dinner, I guarantee it will be better than Colton’s. Recommended for romantic suspense fans. Thanks to the author for providing a free ebook for review.

Book Review | Lethal Legacy by Carol J Post

Lethal Legacy opens with Andrea Wheaton experiencing a home invasion at the family holiday home, which she’s visiting following the death of both parents in a car accident. It soon becomes apparent that the evildoers are looking for something … and they’ll be back.

Bryce Caldwell, next-door neighbour and high-school sweetheart finds her, and her trashed house. It soon becomes apparent that Andi’s father had some secrets, which raises an obvious question: was the car wreck which killed him and Andi’s mother an accident or something more sinister?

Andi is sure it was no accident, which means she needs to find out the why—no matter how painful that might be for her personally. But she’s not expecting other people to be searching around the property as well, to the point where she might be in danger.

Lethal Legacy is published by Love Inspired Suspense, which means it’s an almost-perfect blend of romance and suspense (well, assuming you’re a romantic suspense fan like I am). It’s also a quick read, with all the focus on Andi and Bryce as they try to stay safe … and explore their feelings for each other.

Yes, I’m a big romantic suspense fan, and Lethal Legacy ticked all the genre boxes, as well as strong writing (no less than I’d expect from Carol J Post), page-turning action, and a Christian thread that enhanced the story without being preachy. Recommended for romantic suspense fans.

Quote from Fatal Recall: How could she trust her gut when she couldn't even remember who she was?

Book Review | Fatal Recall by Carol J Post

I don’t know why, but I’m a total sucker for amnesia stories. Something about the idea of waking up with no idea who you are captures my curiosity. Perhaps it’s because we’re all formed by our unique personal histories, so amnesia raises a question:

Are we the same person if we can’t remember who we are?

Tanner Brody is canoeing on the Nantahala River, on the edge of the North Carolina Smokies, when he hears a gunshot, followed a scream. He searches, and finds an unconscious woman. When she wakes, she has no idea of who she is, or how she got there.

And now someone is shooting at them both.

Our nameless heroine remembers nothing. Except she prays when things are bad. Then she remembers an attack. A knife. And she’s holding it.

One of the criticisms of Christian fiction is that it’s full of perfect people living perfect lives. Okay, that’s an overstatement. But it can be hard to find a Christian novel that’s dealing with mending broken people without making that the main focus of the plot.

Fatal Recall manages to address this while maintaining the focus of the plot on the mystery of who the heroine is, the suspense of who is after her, and the developing romance between her and Tanner.

There is a clear but understated message that our background forms us into the adults we become—good or bad. But we don’t have to stay that person. Faith in God can help us become the adults He meant us to be.

Fatal Recall is a fast read, as is typical for Love Inspired Suspense. But it manages to pack a surprising amount of plot, character, and spiritual depth in those words. Recommended for Christian romantic suspense fans.
