Bookish Question #3 | What’s Your Favourite Genre?

What’s your favourite genre?

When I read non-fiction, it’s either a Christian inspirational title, or something to do with writing, editing, publishing or marketing—and a lot of that reading is blog posts rather than books.

When I read fiction, it’s Christian fiction. My favourite genre is romance. Contemporary romance, historical romance, and especially romantic suspense. But I also enjoy women’s fiction and some young adult and new adult authors. I even like science fiction. Basically, anything with strong, intelligent female characters. I don’t do stupid.

My favourite authors? That’s a different question! (But if you really want to know, click here to sign up for my newsletter and I’ll send you a list of my favourites.)

So what’s your favourite genre?

  1. Mystery! I love to read a good mystery. I guess that’s why I write mysteries. That’s not to say I don’t stray into other genres once in a while, but it’s been my favorite for years.

Sometimes I think I am so eclectic I’ll read anything. I can easily have two or more books on the go at once and all different. So for my intentional reading during my morning routine, I am reading Larry Brooks, ‘Story Fix.’ For enjoyment of the literary form I have started ‘Ethan Frome.’ I also love real biographies. I should read more fantasy and sci fi but as I write it, I think it will inform my own stories too much.

I’m currently reading Story Engineering by Larry Brooks 🙂

I know what you mean about not wanting to read in the genre you’re writing. I compromise by alternating writing fiction and non-fiction, which means I can happily read in my genre when I’m writing non-fiction.

Historical fiction but I also enjoy Christian books on worship or true stories of faith. Anything that I can learn from and that will inspire me at the same time. I’ve also recently developed a secret fetish for Michael Connelly. Oh dear, I’m so conflicted!
